The liver
the liver, located on the upper right side of your abdomen between your diaphragm & stomach, is your largest internal organ. it is roughly the size of a football.
all of the blood that passes through the stomach & intestines is filtered through the liver. the liver also produces bile which cleans up the intestines. the liver also produces proteins & stores glycogen until its ready to be converted back into glucose (energy.) excessive alcohol damages the liver as it overworks itself to convert the alcohol into a less toxic substance. according to Chinese medicine, liver upset causes irritation & impatience as in the “raging alcoholic” stereotype.
luckily, the liver is resilient & regenerative; it can replace dead cells with healthy ones. certain herbs can aid the liver in detoxing the body and protect it.
dandelion root aids the liver in cleansing the blood. echinacea root aids in immune function by stimulating phagocytosis, the process of white blood cells attacking foreign substances & dead or infected cells. astragalus also stimulates the production of white blood cells, which helps the body fight against pathogens & viruses.
